Vesoul (vəz l`), town (1990 est. pop. 19,404), capital of Haute-Saône dept., E France, in Franche-Comté. Agricultural and mechanical equipment and metal products are the chief manufactures. It is a major produce and cattle market. Formerly an earldom, Vesoul was decimated by the plague in 1586. It became part of France in 1678.
