The city has several industries—textile mills, paint factories, and food processing plants. It is also a market for the agricultural products of the region. A naval base is there. The city was founded in 1874. Viña del MarCity (pop., 2002 prelim: 330,000), central Chile. It is a residential suburb of Valparaíso. Located on the Pacific Ocean, Viña del Mar is a resort city with a gaming casino, beaches, museums, and theatres. Army and navy garrisons and petroleum depots add to the city's economic base.
