This is a traditional religious event where all participants join the Via Crucis (Station of the Cross) procession starting at the Colosseum and finishing at Mount Palatino.
Karen Davalos, a professor of Chicano studies at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, observed in 2005 that "the Via Crucis in Chicago is about salvation on earth and the parallels between Christ's suffering and our contemporary oppression.
The reenactment of the Via Crucis at "Jesusland" (as Robinson titles the series) as it winds through strategically marked terrain recalls Renaissance sites such as the Sacro Monte in Varallo, Italy.
