Viareggio

Viareggio (vēärĕd`jō), city (1991 pop. 57,514), Tuscany, N central Italy, on the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is a fishing center and a fashionable beach resort. The body of the poet Shelley was cremated there after his death by drowning at Lerici near La Spezia in 1822.

Lippi, from the Tuscan seaside village of Viareggio, was a stolid central defender for Sampdoria who represented Italy once and was in contention for a role at the 1978 World Cup.
Upon his return to Italy in 1914, Pea settled in the resort town of Viareggio on the Tuscan coast, where, under the patronage of local celebrity Giacomo Puccini and working with such younger writers as Eugenio Montale, he organized outdoor arts festivals intended to bring theater and opera to the popolo.
