The method was developed primarily for metals and metal alloys, and, in the case of the Vickers hardness test, dead weight loading with a mass of from 1 kg up to tens of kilograms is applied onto a pyramidal indenter to produce indentations that can be measured easily using a light microscope.
In this modification of the traditional Vickers hardness test, both load and displacement were monitored during the indentation cycle.
