vielle (vyĕl), bowed string instrument used throughout Europe from the 13th cent. through the 15th cent. The vielle resembles the violin violin, family of stringed musical instruments having wooden bodies whose backs and fronts are slightly convex, the fronts pierced by two f-hole-shaped resonance holes. .....
