On the central western border of IN, northwest of Bloomington; organized Jan 21, 1818 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For Giuseppe Maria Francesco Vigo (1747-1836), also known as Col. Francis Vigo, a Mondovian-born fur trader who furnished funds and assistance to Revolutionary soldier George Rogers Clark (1752-1818).

Area (sq mi): 410.47 (land 403.29; water 7.17). Pop per sq mi: 254.40.
Pop 2005: 102,592. State rank: 16. Pop change: 2000-20005 -3.10%; 1990-2000 -0.20%. Pop 2000: 105,848 (White 89.90%; Black or African American 6.00%; Hispanic or Latino 1.20%; Asian 1.20%; Other 2.10%). Foreign born: 2.00%. Median age: 34.90.
Income 2000: per capita $17,620; median household $33,184; Pop below poverty level: 14.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,364-$24,772.

    RESULTS Sixty-five species of fish from 15 families and 40 genera have been taken in the lower Prairie Creek area, Vigo County, Indiana (Table 1).
