Madarász, Viktor 

Born Dec. 14, 1830, in Csetnek; died Jan. 10, 1917, in Budapest. Hungarian painter.

From 1853 to 1855, Madarász studied at the Academy of Arts in Vienna under F. Waldmuller, and from 1856 to 1859 in L. Cogniet’s school in Paris. He was influenced by P. Delaroche. He took part in the Revolution of 1848-49. In his creative work, Madarász remained faithful to the ideals of national liberation, painting intensely romantic pictures on themes from Hungarian history (Zrinyi and Frangepdn, 1864; Dózsa ’s People, 1868; both in the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest) and historical portraits.
