Viktor Tsukkerman

Tsukkerman, Viktor Abramovich 

Born Sept. 23 (Oct. 6), 1903, in Brailov, in what is now Vinnitsa Oblast. Soviet musicologist. Doctor of the arts (1958). Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1966).

Tsukkerman graduated from the Kiev Conservatory, where he had studied piano under G. M. Kogan in 1925 and theory under B. L. Iavorskii, A. A. Al’shvang, V. F. Asmus, and K. V. Kvitka. He became an instructor in music theory at the Moscow Conservatory in 1926 and a professor in 1939.

With L. A. Mazel’, Tsukkerman established a method for the analysis of musical works that makes use of a variety of critical approaches; he and Mazel’ wrote the textbook Analysis of Musical Works: Elements of Music and a Methodology for Analyzing Minor Forms (part 1, 1967). Tsukkerman, who is also a composer, has taught many prominent Soviet composers and musicologists.

Tsukkerman has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
