Villahermosa (vē'yäārmō`sä), city (1990 pop. 261,321), capital of Tabasco state, SE Mexico, on the Grijalva River. The city, which has good communications facilities, is the commercial and distribution center for the surrounding region. Oil is the economic mainstay. Villahermosa was founded in the 16th cent. The city possesses a large collection of Olmec and Mayan artifacts, which are exhibited in the Regional Anthropological Museum and the La Venta Park-Museum.

Villahermosa

City (pop., 2000: 330,846), capital of Tabasco state, southeastern Mexico. Founded in 1596 as Villa Felipe II, it has also been known as San Juan de Villa Hermosa and as San Juan Bautista; it was given its present name in 1915. The cathedral was built in 1614. The archaeological museum is one of the best in Mexico. Villahermosa is the state's chief distributing, processing, and agricultural city. There are Maya archaeological ruins in the area.
