Vinagradov, Vladimir Nikitich 

Born Mar. 12 (24), 1882, in Elets; died July 29, 1964, in Moscow. Soviet internist. Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1944). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1940) and Hero of Socialist Labor (1957).

Vinogradov graduated from the department of medicine of Moscow University in 1907. In 1943 he became head of the subdepartment of faculty internal medicine (subdepartment concerned with particular disease forms) at the First Moscow Medical Institute. His major work was in the early diagnosis of cancer, tuberculosis of the lungs and kidneys, the problem of sepsis in internal medicine, and the pathology of digestion. Vinogradov was the first in the USSR to use bronchoscopy, gastroscopy, catheterization of the heart, and vector cardiography in clinics. In 1949 he became president of the All-Union Society of Internal Medicine and editor of the journal Terapevticheskii arkhiv. He received the State Prize of the USSR (1969, posthumously) and he was awarded five Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
