Vinogradov, Sergei

    0.01 sec.
Vinogradov, Sergei Arsen’evich

Born July 1 (13), 1869, in the settlement of Bol’shie Soli, Kostroma Province (now the village of Nekrasovskoe, Yaroslavl Oblast); died Feb. 5, 1938, in Riga. Russian painter.

Vinogradov studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture (1880-89) under E. S. Sorokin and V. D. Polenov. He was a member of the peredvizhniki (the “wanderers,” a progressive art movement) from 1899 to 1901. Landscape is of great significance in his sunlight-imbued pictures of the 1890’s on themes of peasant life (Workers’ Dinner, 1890; Peasant Women, 1893—both in the Tret’iakov Gallery). From the beginning of the 1900’s he painted mostly lyrical landscapes and interiors in a decorative plein-air style (On the Farmstead in Autumn, 1907, Tret’iakov Gallery). Vinogradov’s work is characteristic of the nucleus of the Union of Russian Artists, of which he was a founder (1903). After 1923 he lived abroad.
