Violent storms include the 1888 blizzard in the central part of the Commonwealth and the 1978 blizzard nearer Boston, the 1938 hurricane in New England and the 1953 Worcester tornado. Most scientists agree that average world temperatures will rise by between two and six degrees Celsius this century due to emissions from burning fossil fuels for power and transport, causing floods, famines and violent storms. Several sessions at the RIMS annual conference focused on recent violent storms and how risk modelers are desperately retooling models to prepare for more frequent and severe storms. |
