Virginia Declaration of RightsMeasure adopted by the colony of Virginia (June 12, 1776). Drafted by George Mason, it stated that “all men are by nature equally free and independent and have certain inherent rights” and specified such civil liberties as freedom of the press and freedom of religion. A new biography by Jeff Broadwater reminds us that, in May of 1776, Mason was the author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights, which begins: "All men are born equally free and independent and have certain inherent natural Rights . The Bill of Rights, added a year before his death, was based on his Virginia Declaration of Rights. |
