Virunga

Virunga (vērng`gä), volcanic range of mountains, E Congo, N Rwanda, and SW Uganda, central Africa, NE of Lake Kivu. It extends along the eastern rim of the Great Rift Valley and separates the basins of the Nile and Congo rivers. Karisimbi (14,786 ft/4,507 m) is the highest peak, and the range includes Nyiragongo Nyiragongo , active volcano (c.11,400 ft/3,475 m) of the Virunga range in E Congo near the Rwanda border, NE of Lake Kivu and 12 mi (19 km) N of Goma, in southern part of Virunga National Park. It erupted in 1948, 1977, and 2002.
