(aerospace engineering)
A set of regulations set down by the U.S. Civil Aeronautics Board (in Civil Air Regulations) to govern the operational control of aircraft during visual flight. Abbreviated VFR.

The flights were under visual flight rules ( VFR), that allow a pilot to see through in clear weather conditions and the air traffic control ( ATC) doesn't have much say in these, unlike in IFR.
