voice coilA type of motor used to move the access arm of a disk drive in very small increments. Like the voice coil of a speaker, the amount of current determines the amount of movement. Contrast with stepper motor, which works in fixed increments. voice coil [′vȯis ‚kȯil] (engineering acoustics) The coil that is attached to the diaphragm of a moving-coil loudspeaker and moves through the air gap between the pole pieces due to interaction of the fixed magnetic field with that associated with the audio-frequency current flowing through the voice coil.
