(Problems of Linguistics), the scholarly journal of the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Published six times a year in Moscow beginning in 1952. Devoted to general problems in linguistics. From 1952 to 1970 the chief editor was V. V. Vinogradov.
The journal publishes theoretical articles based on materials from Russian, Old Slavonic, Western European languages, languages of the peoples of the USSR, and, occasionally, foreign languages of Asia, Africa, and America. It also includes discussion materials, reports, publications on the history of linguistics, surveys, reviews, and news on scholarly activities in the USSR and abroad. Circulation, more than 7,000 (1971).
