Voyageurs National Park,

218,200 acres (88,340 hectares), N Minnesota. The park contains forested lake country noted for its sports fishing and glacial features. In the 18th cent. the region was a trade route for French-Canadian voyageurs (fur traders). Authorized in 1971, it was fully established as a national park in 1975. Established: Authorized on January 8, 1971; established on April 8, 1975.
Location:In northern Minnesota, near the US/Canadian border, 15 miles east of International Falls and 300 miles north of Minneapolis-Saint Paul. Voyageurs is a water-based park (nearly one-third of the park is water). Access to the Kabetogama peninsula, the islands, and nearly all of the park's shoreline is by watercraft.
Facilities:Campgrounds, picnic area, rest rooms (é), lodging, groceries, restaurant/snacks, boat rental, boat ramp, visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail.
Activities:Camping, hiking, swimming, boating, kayaking, fishing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, wildlife viewing, interpretive programs.
Special Features:This waterway of four large lakes connected by narrows was once the route of the French-Canadian voyageurs who paddled birch bark canoes full of animal pelts and trade goods on their way to Lake Athabaska in Canada. Park lies in the southern part of the Canadian Shield, representing some of the oldest exposed rock formations in the world.
