Vries, Adriaen de (ä`drēän də vrēs), c.1560–c.1626, Dutch sculptor. Having studied in Florence under Giovanni Bologna, he carried into Bohemia and Germany the influence of the Italian Renaissance. In Prague he worked under the patronage of Emperor Rudolf II, of whom he made busts and reliefs, which are now in Vienna. His finest works, done in Augsburg, are the Mercury and Hercules and the Hydra fountains. Among his bronzes are Mercury and Psyche (Louvre) and Triton (Metropolitan Mus.). |
