Wolverhampton (w l`vərhămp'tən), city (1991 pop. 263,501) and metropolitan district, W central England, in the Black Country Black Country, highly industrialized region, mostly in Staffordshire but partly in Worcestershire and Warwickshire, W central England. Wolverhampton is highly industrialized; products include automobiles, hardware, rayon, tires, and chemicals. St. Peter's Church in the city dates mostly from the 13th and 15th cent. Its grammar school was established in 1512. Teacher-training institutions and a technical school are also there.
