Wadowice

Wadowice (vädōvē`tsĕ), town (1993 est. pop. 19,600), Bielsko-Biała prov., S Poland, on Skawa River, 23 mi (37 km) WSW of Kraków. Located in a region of rolling hills, Wadowice is a railroad junction; its industries include cement-products, wire, and footwear manufacturing and food processing. In World War II, under German rule, Wadowice was called Frauenstadt. Pope John Paul II John Paul II, 1920–2005, pope (1978–2005), a Pole (b. Wadowice) named Karol Józef Wojtyła; successor of John Paul I. He was the first non-Italian pope elected since the Dutch Adrian VI (1522–23) and the first Polish and Slavic pope.

Pilgrims are seeking healing at the foot of a new statue of Pope John Paul II in his hometown of Wadowice, Poland.
The baker Witold Hardek, owner of Cukiernia Kremowa in Wadowice, Poland, which makes Kremowki Papiersz - Pope's cakes "When the Pope came to Wadowice in 1999 he told the story of how, as a boy, he loved cream cakes sold at a bakery opposite the church.
Perhaps the abiding legacy of the man born Karol Wojtyla in Wadowice, Poland, is that he made himself important not just to Catholics, not just to other Christians, but to those of other faiths and even no faith at all.
