Waekumkang
a spa in the People’s Democratic Republic of Korea near the Sea of Japan, 6 km from Kosong and 90 km south of Wonsan. The climate is warm and maritime. Winters are moderately mild (average January temperature is -3.6° C), and summers are hot (average August temperature is 24.5° C). Annual precipitation averages 1,390 mm. The chief cures are the hot radon springs, whose waters are used for bathing and other forms of balneotherapy. Treatment is offered to those suffering from ailments of the motor and support organs and the cardiovascular system, as well as from trauma and afflictions of the peripheral nervous system. A. D.
