Wagner, Robert F., Jr. (1910–91) mayor, diplomat; born in New York City. He was the son of U.S. Senator Robert F. Wagner. He graudated from Yale University (1933) and Yale Law School (1937). He was a decorated intelligence officer in the Army Air Corps and served in the New York State Assembly. As three-term mayor of New York City (1954–65), he was known for his cautious consensus-building. An advocate of programs for the poor, he introduced significant reforms in education and housing. He served as ambassador to Spain (1968–69) and emissary to the Vatican (1978–80). |
