Name Origin: For a Chinook tribe and chief, Wakiacum, a name believed to mean 'tall trees' or 'big timber.' The spelling was probably changed to reflect the Indian pronunciation. Area (sq mi): 286.69 (land 264.24; water 22.45). Pop per sq mi: 14.60. Pop 2005: 3,849. State rank: 38. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.70%; 1990-2000 14.90%. Pop 2000: 3,824 (White 92.70%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 2.60%; Asian 0.50%; Other 5.80%). Foreign born: 1.30%. Median age: 44.40.
