In north-central NC, east of Durham; organized 1771 (prior to statehood) from Cumberland, Johnston, and Orange counties. Name Origin: For Margaret Wake (1733-1819), wife of Gov. William Tryon (1729-88).

Pop 2005: 748,815. State rank: 2. Pop change: 2000-20005 19.30%; 1990-2000 48.30%. Pop 2000: 627,846 (White 69.90%; Black or African American 19.70%; Hispanic or Latino 5.40%; Asian 3.40%; Other 4.40%). Foreign born: 9.70%. Median age: 32.90.
