Wald, František

Born Jan. 9, 1861, in Brandisek; died Oct. 19, 1930, in Vitkovice. Czechoslovak physical chemist and metallurgist.

Wald graduated from the Higher Technical School in Prague, and beginning in 1882 he worked as a chemist. From 1886 to 1908 he was chief chemist for the iron works in Kladno (Bohemia). From 1908 to 1928, Wald was a professor at the Higher Technical School in Prague. His work facilitated the development of industry in Bohemia. In 1882 he introduced a method of quantitative determination of the iron in a hydrochloric-acid solution by means of titration with potassium permanganate; this method is used even today.
