Walker, William H. (1869–1934) chemical engineer; born near Pittsburgh, Pa. He organized and directed the department of chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1905). He conducted research on cellulose and coinvented a method of manufacturing artificial silk (1905). During World War I he was instrumental in setting up the chemical warfare program.
