On the southeastern border of WA; original county; organized Apr 25, 1854 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: Apparently for a small tribe, closely related to the Nez Perce, which took its name from the Walla Walla River, 'place of many waters,' referring to the many tributaries, springs, and streams in the area. Lewis and Clark recorded the name as Wollah Wollah.

Area (sq mi): 1299.25 (land 1270.51; water 28.74). Pop per sq mi: 45.30.
Pop 2005: 57,558. State rank: 20. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.30%; 1990-2000 13.90%. Pop 2000: 55,180 (White 78.80%; Black or African American 1.70%; Hispanic or Latino 15.70%; Asian 1.10%; Other 11.80%). Foreign born: 9.40%. Median age: 34.90.
Income 2000: per capita $16,509; median household $35,900; Pop below poverty level: 15.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,643-$24,417.
Unemployment 2004: 6.10%. Change from 2000: -0.40%. Median travel time to work: 15.20 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 13.70%.

    Newport Northwest has been actively involved in regional power project development over the past year and currently is developing a similar power plant, the Wallula Power Project, in western Walla Walla County, Washington.
    Officials at the Walla Walla County plant cooperated with the government team and permitted them to observe various plant procedures, including the process by which cattle are rendered unconscious at the beginning of the slaughter process.
