Name Origin: Apparently for a small tribe, closely related to the Nez Perce, which took its name from the Walla Walla River, 'place of many waters,' referring to the many tributaries, springs, and streams in the area. Lewis and Clark recorded the name as Area (sq mi): 1299.25 (land 1270.51; water 28.74). Pop per sq mi: 45.30. Pop 2005: 57,558. State rank: 20. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.30%; 1990-2000 13.90%. Pop 2000: 55,180 (White 78.80%; Black or African American 1.70%; Hispanic or Latino 15.70%; Asian 1.10%; Other 11.80%). Foreign born: 9.40%. Median age: 34.90.
