Wallace, Lewis

Wallace, Lewis (1827–1905) author, soldier; born in Brookville, Ind. He served with volunteer troops in the Mexican War, practiced law and was active in political and militia affairs in Indiana, and commanded a division under Grant at Shiloh (1862). His novel, Ben Hur, a story of Christians in the Roman Empire, has been in print continuously since it first appeared in 1880.
