Walnut Canyon National Monument

National monument, north-central Arizona, U.S. Established in 1915 and covering an area of 3 sq mi (8 sq km), it preserves more than 300 pre-Columbian dwellings built by the Pueblo Indians in shallow caves on the canyon walls. Main occupancy was from AD 1000 to 1200.

Size: 3,579 acres.
Established: Proclaimed on November 30, 1915; transferred from Forest Service on August 10, 1933.
Location: 10 miles east of downtown Flagstaff, Arizona. From I-40, take Exit 204 to entrance road.
Facilities: Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center, museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities: Hiking, guided walks.
Special Features: These cliff dwellings were built in shallow caves under ledges of limestone by the Sinagua People more than 700 years ago. Though the Sinagua were the canyon's only permanent residents, artifacts found here indicate that they were preceded by Archaic peoples who traveled throughout the Southwest thousands of years ago.

In Arizona, the Obama administration is studying the possibility of expanding the Walnut Canyon National Monument near Flagstaff, which features ancient cliff dwellings and wildlife habitat.

WALNUT CANYON Carving a dwelling out of a rock face would have been an exacting task with prehistoric implements, so inhabitants of this steep-walled canyon relied on nature for the heavy excavation.
