Walschap, Gerard

Born July 9, 1898, in Londerzeel. Belgian writer who writes in Flemish.

Walschap’s first novel, Waldo (1928), was written in a religious-mystical tone. In the novels Marriage (1933), Celibacy (1934), and A Man of Good Will (1936) and in the trilogy The Roothooft Family (1939), Walschap criticizes bourgeois morality but exaggerates the hereditary factor. The novels Our Happiness (1946) and Sister Vergilia (1951) are imbued with individualism. Walschap’s departure from Catholicism is apparent in the novels Sibylle (1938) and Houtekiet (1939). He also wrote the anticolonial novel Revolt in the Congo (1953) and the novels The Prodigal Son (1958) and The Double (1964) about the formation of personality.
