Walter Arnold

Arnold, Walter 

Born in Leipzig, Aug. 27, 1909. German sculptor in the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

Arnold is a member of the German Academy of Arts in Berlin (1952), and he was chairman of the Artists’ Union of Germany (1959–64). He studied at the Vocational Art School in Leipzig (1928—32). Arnold has been a professor since 1946. He works in Dresden and is one of the most outstanding realistic artists of the GDR. His works include the following, all in bronze: Youth—the Builder of the GDR (1951, Annenschule, Karl-Marx-Stadt), a monument to E. Thälmann in Weimar (1958), and a portrait of W. Ulbricht (1959, in the Central Committee building of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, Berlin). He has won the National Prize of the GDR (1952, 1959).
