Walther von der Vogelweide (väl`tər fən dĕr fō`gəlvī'də), c.1170–c.1230, German minnesinger of noble birth, probably the finest lyric poet of medieval Germany. He wandered from court to court singing songs for which he wrote both words and music. In addition he was noted for his Sprüche, or maxims, which were frequently political.

Walther von der Vogelweide

(born c. 1170—died c. 1230, Würzburg?) Greatest German lyric poet of the Middle Ages. Of knightly birth, Walther was educated at a monastery school and served masters in several courts. His poetry goes far beyond the artificial conventions followed by other minnesingers by introducing an element of realism. He emphasizes the virtues of the balanced life, in both the social and the personal spheres. More than half of his approximately 200 extant poems are political, moral, or religious; the rest are love poems, among them the popular “Unter der Linden.”

Walther Von Der Vogelweide 

Born circa 1170, in the southern Tyrol; died circa 1230, near Würzburg. Austro-German minnesinger.

A representative of the courtly chivalrous tradition of poetry, Walther wrote love lyrics and political songs. His satiric epigrams were directed against the papacy and feudal internecine wars. He was the first to sing of love for a peasant girl in a chivalrous lyric. Walther’s poetry is distinguished by its similarity to the folk song.
