In central part of FL panhandle, east of Pensacola; organized Dec 29, 1824 (prior to statehood) from Jackson County. Name Origin: For Col. George William Walton (1740-1804), secretary of the Territory of West Florida under Andrew Jackson (1821-22).

Area (sq mi): 1238.03 (land 1057.56; water 180.47). Pop per sq mi: 47.60.
Pop 2005: 50,324. State rank: 41. Pop change: 2000-20005 23.90%; 1990-2000 46.30%. Pop 2000: 40,601 (White 87.30%; Black or African American 7.00%; Hispanic or Latino 2.20%; Asian 0.50%; Other 4.20%). Foreign born: 3.20%. Median age: 40.50.
Income 2000: per capita $18,198; median household $32,407; Pop below poverty level: 14.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,504-$20,750.

In central GA, east of Atlanta; original county; organized Dec 15, 1818 from Cherokee lands. Name Origin: For George Walton (1741-1804), a signer of the Declaration of Independence, GA governor (1779-80; 1789), and U.S. senator (1795-96).

    The Walton County Sheriff's Office was still trying to determine what prompted Dannie Baker, 60, to leave his house in Miramar Beach in northern Florida early Thursday and shoot the victims.
    Confirming the report, Walton County Assistant District Attorney Eric Crawford said 27-year-old Joseph Pallipurath gave a videotaped confession on Tuesday, hours after he was arrested at a motel 40 miles east of Atlanta.
    In a July 12 letter, Americans United Assistant Legal Director Richard Katskee informed the Walton County Board of Commissioners that an annual nativity scene outside the Walton County Courthouse raised constitutional issues.
