Wang, An (1920–90) electrical engineer, applied physicist; born in Shanghai, China. He emigrated to the United States in 1945. In 1948 he invented magnetic core memory, a key element in computer technology. In 1951 he founded Wang Laboratories in Boston, which he took public in 1955; for many years his firm took the lead in providing office computers, but by the 1980s the competition had caught up with him; he turned the firm over to his son in 1986.
