Wannier, Gregory H. (Hugh) (1911–83) physicist; born in Basel, Switzerland. He taught at the University of Geneva (1935–36), then came to the U.S.A. as an exchange student at Princeton (1936–37). After teaching at several American universities, he became a physicist in private industry (1946–60), then returned to academic life at the University of Oregon (1961–77). Wannier made major advances in solid state physics, including molecular and crystal structure, magnetism, and statistical methods. How to thank TFD for its existence?
