In north-central ND; organized Apr 14, 1885 (prior to statehood) from Renville County. Name Origin: For either J.P. Ward or Mark Ward (1844-1902), or both, members of the Dakota Territory legislature in 1885 when the county was formed.

Area (sq mi): 2056.25 (land 2012.88; water 43.36). Pop per sq mi: 27.70.
Pop 2005: 55,767. State rank: 4. Pop change: 2000-20005 -5.20%; 1990-2000 1.50%. Pop 2000: 58,795 (White 91.50%; Black or African American 2.20%; Hispanic or Latino 1.90%; Asian 0.80%; Other 4.60%). Foreign born: 2.10%. Median age: 32.40.

    In west-central TX, southwest of Odessa; organized 1891 from Tom Green County (other sources say organized Feb 26, 1887; first federal census: 1890). Name Origin: For Thomas William "Peg Leg" Ward (1807-72), soldier in the TX war of independence, mayor of Austin (1840; 1857; 1865), and U.S. consul to Panama (1840; 1853; 1865).
