warez

/weirz/ A term used by software pirates use to describe a cracked game or application that is made available to the Internet, usually via FTP or telnet, often the pirate will make use of a site with lax security.

Software piracy is illegal and should be reported to the Federation Against Software Theft (FAST).

warez

(soft "wares") Pirated software distributed over the Internet. A warez site may also provide hackers with viruses and Trojans as well as tips, techniques and scripts for gaining illegal entry into networks and systems. According to the Customs Service, warez groups don't steal and distribute pirated software for profit; rather, they do it "for the mere challenge and fun of it," adding that groups compete to release the best, and newest, software.
Gradually, though, the efforts became concentrated on finding effective ways to make music available online, as with the systems that the warez groups had invented for MP3 retrieval and, later, in the development and enhancement of file-sharing applications.
