Waring, James (1922–75) modern and ballet dancer, choreographer; born in Alameda, Calif. Trained in the Graham technique as well as in classical ballet, he created a distinctive form of pictorial theater for his own company (1954–69) and others. He became a major influence on postmodern dance, with Phrases and Amoretti among his best known works.
