Warner, W. (William) Lloyd (1898–1970) anthropologist, sociologist; born in Redlands, Calif. His doctoral dissertation, A Black Civilization (1937, several times revised), was a major work on aboriginal tribal kinship systems. Warner applied anthropological research methods to contemporary American society in his studies of class structure, symbol systems, and industrial relations. He taught at the University of Chicago (1935–59) and Michigan State University (1959–70). |
