Warrad, Faiq

Born Dec. 24, 1926, near Jerusalem. Figure in the Jordanian working-class and national liberation movements.

A teacher by profession, Warrad joined the National Liberation League in 1945 and became a member of its Central Committee in 1949. In 1951 the league was renamed the Jordan Communist Party, and Warrad was named a member of the Politburo of the party’s Central Committee. He was elected a member of the National Assembly (Parliament) in 1956. Arrested in 1957, Warrad remained in prison until 1965. In December 1967 he was exiled by the Israeli authorities from the territory Israel had occupied on the west bank of the Jordan River. Warrad became first secretary of the Jordan Communist Party in October 1976.
