On the central northern border of OR; organized Jan 11, 1854 (prior to statehood), from the original Champoeg district; it covered all of Oregon east of the Cascade Range, most of Idaho, and parts of MT and WY. Name Origin: For the Wasco or Wascopam Indian tribe of Chinookan linguistic stock; the name means 'cup' or 'bowl.'
