Watling Island

Watling Island or Watlings Island: see San Salvador San Salvador, island of the Bahamas , West Indies. Many historians believe that it was the first land sighted by Columbus in the New World in 1492. The indigenous population called it Guanahani, and it has also been named Watling or Watlings Island.

On 12 October, 1492, Christopher Columbus, backed by the Spanish monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, reached Watling Island in the Bahamas, discovering not a route to the east, as he expected, but a new continent.
The island is 65 miles southeast of San Salvador, known as Watling Island prior to 1926, which many history books peg as the place where Columbus first dropped anchor.
