Robbins kept the dance theme going by inviting all of the performers back to the stage for an energizing 15-person version of the classic "Land of A Thousand Dances" that drew a standing ovation even as audience members gyrated to The Watusi, The Mashed Potato, The Alligator, and the other dances mentioned in the song.
But some speculate that Thomas' Watusi (Hard Edge), a colorful, nonobjective work from 1963, too closely resembled The Snail, a gouache and cut-paper piece done by Henri Matisse 10 years earlier.
On his 200-acre property about an hour north of Orlando, he houses a menagerie of exotic critters: 14 tigers, two lions, a leopard, a cougar, llamas, a couple of miniature zebu (a type of cow), plus an entire herd of Watusi African cattle.
