Waugh, Alec And Evelyn
English writers and brothers. Alec Waugh, born July 8, 1898, in London, was the author of the novel The Loom of Youth (1917), books about his travels, and colonial novels. Evelyn Waugh was born Oct. 28, 1903, in London and died there Apr. 9, 1966. In his first novel, Decline and Fall (1928), he portrayed the highest circles of English bourgeois society in a critical light. His best novel, Bride she ad Revisited (1945), depicts the degradation of the English aristocracy. A symbolic portrayal of the spiritual barrenness of American bourgeois civilization is provided in the novella The Loved One (1948). English militarism appears in a satirical and grotesque light in his trilogy about World War II, The Sword of Honor: Men at Arms (1952), Officers and Gentlemen (1955), and Unconditional Surrender (1961; published in the USA as The End of the Battle).
