Name Origin: From an Indian word possibly meaning 'good land river' or for a Winnebago word meaning 'foxes.' Corruption of the name of a Winnebago chief, an ancient Winnebago village, and the Indian name for Fox Lake. Area (sq mi): 637.39 (land 626.03; water 11.36). Pop per sq mi: 39.60. Pop 2005: 24,789. State rank: 47. Pop change: 2000-20005 7.10%; 1990-2000 19.40%. Pop 2000: 23,154 (White 94.80%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 3.70%; Asian 0.30%; Other 2.60%). Foreign born: 2.00%. Median age: 42.10. Income 2000: per capita $18,144; median household $37,000; Pop below poverty level: 9.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,913-$21,762.
