Wayfaring Tree

(Viburnum lantana), a shrub or small tree of the genus Viburnum of the family Caprifoliaceae. It grows up to five m in height. The leaves are deciduous, entire, and sharply dentate around the edge; the undersides are at first gray and tomentose and later green. The wintering buds are without scales. The flowers are bisexual, small, whitish, and gathered in corymbs. The mature fruits are black. The wayfaring tree grows in Western Europe, North Africa, and Asia Minor; in the USSR it is found in the southwestern European part, the Crimea, and the Caucasus. It is raised as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks as far north as Leningrad; it is also used in steppe forestation.

I think of those images which burned their way into my visual memory over the past couple of days wandering in Gloucestershire: the dark mass that is the ancient tree trunk of the Tortworth chestnut; blood dripping from a wound on a ram's head; the shining silver Severn seen from the Cotswold edge; blue flowers of nettle-leaved bellflower and the red berries of a wayfaring tree.
There are two wild British species worth considering mainly for their red autumn leaves: Viburnum opulus, the guelder-rose, and Viburnum lantana, the wayfaring tree.
