Waynesboro

Waynesboro, city (1990 pop. 18,549), surrounded by but politically independent of August co., central Va., in the Shenandoah valley; settled c.1736, inc. as a city 1948. An industrial center in a farm area, it has plants manufacturing a diverse variety of products. In the battle of Waynesboro (Mar., 1865), Gen. Jubal Early's heavily outnumbered Confederate troops were severely defeated by a detachment of Sheridan's army under Custer. Tourists are drawn to nearby Sherando Lake Recreation Area, George Washington National Forest, and a national park.

In north-central VA, in the Shenandoah Valley at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, 12 mi. southeast of Staunton. Laid out in 1797; established as a town in 1801. Incorporated as a town in 1834; as a city in 1948. Annexed part of Augusta County effective July 1, 1994. Name Origin: For Gen. Anthony Wayne (1745-96), PA soldier and statesman, nicknamed "Mad Anthony" for his daring during the American Revolution.

Area (sq mi): 15.38 (land 15.36; water 0.02). Pop per sq mi: 1384.70.
Pop 2005: 21,269. State rank: 74. Pop change: 2000-20005 9.00%; 1990-2000 5.20%. Pop 2000: 19,520 (White 84.50%; Black or African American 10.00%; Hispanic or Latino 3.30%; Asian 0.60%; Other 3.00%). Foreign born: 2.40%. Median age: 38.90.
Income 2000: per capita $17,932; median household $32,686; Pop below poverty level: 12.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,053-$25,847.
Unemployment 2004: 3.60%. Change from 2000: -0.50%. Median travel time to work: 19.30 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 54.90%.
